In, I think, 1953 (definately between 1950-1953), Ong visited Alice Toklas in her Paris appartment. He recalls the meeting, as well as his friendship with John and Simone Brown (to whom The Presence of the Word is dedicated), and Fr. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, S.J in a 15 minute oral history, recorded in 1981. While the recording quality itself isn’t great, the piece is interesting. While Ong is more commonly equated with Renaissance literature, he did teach courses on modernist poetry, which included, of course, Gertrude Stein. This oral history, and another seven audio files (over 5 1/2 hours), can be found at the digital audio collection holdings of the Walter J. Ong Collection web site.
